This year’s stewardship theme highlights the joy that accompanies generosity. The Apostle Paul, who travelled widely and was aware of the material needs of the saints in Jerusalem, invited the believers in the thriving city of Corinth to share with those in need. Appealing not to cold duty but to cheerful and warm-hearted generosity, Paul laid the foundation for Christian stewardship. Now as then, we are called by God to offer our gifts in joyful generosity:
- …Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)
Our annual Stewardship campaign features the opportunity for each of us to sow seeds of generosity as we offer a cheerful gift to the Lord. When we thoughtfully and prayerfully fill out our pledge cards and bring them to the church sanctuary on Pledge Sunday (Nov. 10), we will be taking part in a Christian tradition that reaches back to first century Corinth. The early church had needs, from the poor saints in Jerusalem to the itinerant evangelists spreading the good news of Jesus around the Mediterranean world. From the very earliest days of the church, being a member of the body of Christ meant having the privilege to joyfully give for the good of the gospel and the glory of God.
